Glostrup Hospital is the largest and most specialized hospital in Denmark. When planning a 20-percent extension of the hospital, it contracted Coromatic as a partner in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the hospital’s new power and cooling system.

Challenge

Today’s hospital operations are increasingly digitalized. Maintaining a secure and uninterruptible power and cooling supply are business-critical functions to provide patient care and save lives.

— The hospital is to build a 25,000 sqm extension and in conjunction with this we realized that our power supply with the emergency power system and cooling was not large enough for future needs, says project manager Mie Rasmussen at Glostrup Hospital.

Coromatic was awarded the contract valued at about SEK 125 million. The agreement is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), where both parties share in the investment and the risk. The contract includes a service-level agreement (SLA) that will run for 15 years at an agreed operating cost.

— One important reason we chose Coromatic was that they have references from similar facilities, Mie Rasmussen points out. Of course, they also fulfilled the requirements and have the financial strength necessary for this type of collaboration.

New solution for electricity and cooling

Coromatic is responsible for ensuring that the power supply never fails at the hospital. The system is therefore robustly built with everything duplicated. Robust means the facility in itself is highly stable.

An operational solution with a monitoring system is connected to this, where Coromatic is responsible for the functions together with the hospital’s own technical department. If power is lost from the electricity grid, then emergency power is supplied from UPSs and diesel generators.

The hospital uses water cooling today. Coromatic will cut the pipes for the inflow and outflow of cooling water and instead connect a cooling system that uses geothermal cooling to create the correct indoor climate.

If there are problems with the hydraulic balance in the groundwater then there is a backup system with a mechanical cooling system. Coromatic guarantees temperatures within a given interval and with a given energy efficiency for the next 15 years.

Overall, for both electricity and cooling, the contract is subject to fines with a large number of technically defined levels if Coromatic fails to meet the SLA. For example, there must not be a single brief outage in the electricity system, either in the reception area or the operating theatres.

 

Results

The system Coromatic is building will be complete in summer 2017. The extension of the hospital will begin in 2017 and be ready in 2020.

— The cooperation is running according to plan and in a good atmosphere, Mie Rasmussen comments. I believe Coromatic provides a very high level of competence and know-how in these fields. This has convinced me that Coromatic is a reliable partner for us.

The main challenge is that the hospital is fully operational during the project and nothing can stop working during installation. Both the electricity and cooling systems are seen by the hospital as emergency preparedness facilities, as they are vitally important for patient security.
